例如你會在快餐店吃French fries(薯條)、French toast(多士)。
Pardon my French
1.Pardon my French﹕
e.g. You're eating like a pig, if you'll pardon my French.
2.French letter﹕condom安全套
3.to take French leave﹕
e.g. John and Peter were sacked because they often took French leave.
而「to go Dutch」的確是「AA制」的意思,但西方人常以「Let's split the bill」來代替「Let's go Dutch」,以下的idioms都跟荷蘭人有關。
1.to get Dutch courage﹕
e.g. Adam got Dutch courage to propose to his girlfriend.
2.a Dutch auction﹕
e.g. If you want to save money, you can purchase electronic goods at Dutch auctions on the Internet.
Scot-free
Since the boss was out of town, John took French leave and got off scot-free.
「As solid as the rock of Gibraltar」是十分堅定、絕不動搖的意思。原因是Gibraltar(直布羅陀)有很巨大而堅硬的石頭,是著名景點。 I'll love you my whole life, as solid as the rock of Gibraltar.
China tea
回到亞洲,猜猜「not for all the tea in China」的意思﹖中國是輸出飲茶文化的國家,又盛產茶葉,「not for all the tea in China」的解釋是「絕對不可能」。
e.g. Tom ﹕ Would you like to live in space?
Jack: No way! Not for all the tea in China.
